News from the nursery:

The team have been busy this week changing the nursery from bareroot season into spring. The roses have been potted up and are putting on new roots & growth over in the field (they’ll be back for sale in a month or so). Imogen has started potting up the fruit trees & it’s the last chance for bareroot hedging. We have lots of new perennials in this week, as well as beautiful tulips in pots to add some instant spring colour to your garden.

This week’s DEEBEE is the Aspidistra, also known as the Cast Iron plant. A striking houseplant with tall, dark green, paddle-shaped leaves. It was a favourite in Victorian households with many drawing rooms displaying a prized aspidistra, as it was one the few plants that could cope with the poor lighting & air quality caused by coal fires & gas lighting. The phrase this week ‘The biggest aspidistra in the world’ refers to the 1938 song by Gracie Fields. If you haven’t heard it then it is worth a listen…they definitely don’t make songs like that anymore!

We have welcomed lots of children this week to take part in Daisy Duck’s Easter hunt. It isn’t on this weekend but returns again next week (8th,10th, 11th & 12th April)? This year it will be on during selected days only, due to limited space in the nursery (the meadow is closed for recovery) & the increase in customers keen to visit us for plants for their garden. No need to book just turn up. This event raises money for the wonderful mental health charities Mind & Restore ~ we really appreciate your support ?❤️ Each child taking part receives a prize & certificate ?

This week’s highlights: Hardy ferns, magnolias, lilac tulips (4 packs) just £2, lilacs, hostas, dianthus, fuchsias, primulas, instant climbers, topiary, hydrangeas, glazed pots, rock roses & more!

Some jobs for the garden:
* Train climbers, such as vitis coignetiae or actinidia, that have grown a bit wild
* Prune evergreen hedges before it warms up too much
* Clean out ponds & cut off dead leaves on aquatic plants
* Spring clean your bird feeders

Wishing you all the best
Andrew, Liz, Lucy & Simon

P.S. No Daisy Duck’s Easter Hunt this weekend, it returns again on Monday
